HBC History

On a Wednesday evening – September 23, 1987 – a small group of believers in Jesus Christ met at the home of Dr. Worth Worley at 25 Dunsfold Drive. The purpose of the meeting was to start a new independent Baptist church in Singapore. This new church was to be established under the authority of the Central Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia, USA.

The following Wednesday evening, September 30, 1987, this dedicated group of believers in Jesus Christ met to determine a name for their new church. The names suggested were Metropolitan Baptist Church, Lion City Baptist Church, and Heritage Baptist Church – the latter was the name that was chosen by a majority vote.

A short time later – on Saturday afternoon, November 7, 1987 – a group of 24 people met together at the Balmoral Room in the Garden Hotel, Singapore, for the official organizational service of the Heritage Baptist Church. These 24 people became the charter members of the Heritage Baptist Church. The church was officially accepted by the Registry of Society as a legal and law abiding entity on June 3, 1988.

From the very beginning, Heritage Baptist Church has been a missions minded church. When only six months old, the church held its first annual missions conference in March, 1988. Over the years, the love and burden of this church for missions has not changed. In that first conference, it was unanimously voted that the church begin sending monthly support to eight missionary projects – at the present time, we are supporting every month 31 mission projects around the world. As a church, we are able to truthfully say that “the sun never sets on the ministry of Heritage Baptist Church!”

As the church began to grow, it soon became apparent that a larger facility than Pastor Worley’s living room was going to be needed. A move was made to a new meeting place in January, 1989, followed by another move in December, 1990.

In March, 1994, the church moved to the third floor of the Singapore Christian Conference Centre on Kampong Arang Road. This facility was used until February, 2006, when the church then moved to the Hersing Hub at Lorong 5, Toa Payoh.

In December 2008, when it became apparent that the church needed bigger facilities to accommodate the growing congregation, God opened the door to a new facility on the entire 8th floor of the Storhub/Hersing Hub buildings, totaling a gross floor area of over 20,000 sq ft.

In November 2008, the church also completed the purchase (without any loans) of a shophouse unit at Blk 123 Lorong 1, Toa Payoh and that serves as the church office and activity centre.

It is our prayer that Heritage Baptist Church will be able to serve the needs of its members and the residents living in Toa Payoh on a daily basis from both the Heritage Baptist Activity Centre as well as the facilities at Storhub for our Sunday services.

In April, 1994, Pastor Ray Crocker arrived in Singapore to serve as Pastor Worley’s associate and to help in the organizing of the Heritage Baptist School of Theology. Classes began in July, 1994. From this school, our graduates have gone on to pastor churches at home and on the foreign field. Our prayer is that many others will follow in their steps.

In February, 1995, Pastor Worley announced his conviction that God was calling him to go to eastern Russia as a missionary and to start a new church. In May, 1995, Pastor Worley left and the church unanimously voted to call Pastor Crocker to serve as senior pastor. Pastor Crocker served as both pastor of the church and administrator of the school of theology until September, 1997, when Dr. Daniel Moore arrived in Singapore and took over the duties as the administrator of HBST.

It has been noted that in the Bible, the book of Acts has no proper ending because of the fact that the history of the church is still being written. In the same way, we will not seek to end this history because, by God’s grace, it is still being written – and will continue to be written until the Lord Jesus Christ comes again to take us home to Glory.
